PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers freshman
JJ Aiello was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday evening. Aiello earned the honor in the Big Ten's first weekly awards recognition of the season, given for the Scarlet Knights opening weekend victory Saturday at No. 20 Lehigh.
Aiello made his collegiate debut as a starting attackman in the road opener at the Mountain Hawks and found the scoresheet instantly. Aiello scored his first collegiate goal in the first quarter of that game, giving Rutgers a 2-1 lead. He added an assist and two ground balls in the contest.
As the accolade was being awarded, Rutgers was in action, playing the second game of the season and improving to 2-0 on the young year with a victory over LIU. Game two was another strong performance for the Bayport, N.Y. native, who tallied two more goals against the Sharks.
Aiello now has three goals and an assist for four points on the year. He and the team are back in action on Saturday, hosting Stony Brook at noon.
