Adams's Triple-Double Leads Women's Basketball Over Charleston to WNIT Great 8

PISCATAWAY, N.J. –The Rutgers women's basketball team (13-19, 3-15 B1G) defeated the College of Charleston (25-7, 14-4 CAA), 89-67, in the Super 16 of the WNIT at Jersey Mike's Arena on Thursday night.

Destiny Adams recorded the first triple-double of her career in the win, with 18 points, 15 rebounds and a career high 10 assists.

Six Scarlet Knights reached double figures, including all five starters. Petticord added 18 points off the bench, thanks to a career best six three-pointers. Zachara Perkins (10) and Awa Sidibe (12) contributed as well.

JoJo Lacey collected her second double-double of the season and third of her career, pacing the team with 19 points and 10 boards.

Cornwell also secured her third double-double of the season and 15th of her career with 12 points and 11 rebounds.

How it Happened

  • JoJo Lacey got RU on the board right away with a free throw.
  • After the Cougars made a three-pointer, Zachara Perkins drained her own deep ball along with a layup from Lacey.
  • Charleston answered with a pair of jumpers to retake the lead, but the Scarlet Knights remained on top, 12-7, after six straight points with 5:21 remaining.
  • Rutgers and CofC went onto trade baskets before the Cougars rattled off a 5-0 run and knotted the game, 14-14.
  • Back-to-back layups from Chyna Cornwell and a Mya Petticord three-pointer, along with baskets from Charleston, ended the period with RU retaining the edge, 21-19.
  • Destiny Adams and Awa Sidibe both sank layups as the second quarter got underway, but the Cougars quickly answered with another five-point stretch, forcing an RU timeout at 7:36.
  • Out of the break, Cornwell made two baskets at the charity stripe, but CofC answered back again with two layups to take the 28-27 lead for the first time.
  • However, RU fought back with a Sidibe shot beyond the arc and two free throws from Adams to take back the four-point advantage with 4:38 to go.
  • Cornwell cashed in on a three-point play to give her team some more momentum, but the Cougars didn't budge. The opposition came back to tie the contest with 1:25 left in the half. Perkins, however, made a layup and sent RU to the locker room with a two-point lead, 38-36.
  • Rutgers kept the Cougars scoreless for the first four minutes of the quarter as the team went on a 6-0 run thanks to Sidibe, Lacey and Adams.
  • Both programs traded baskets, including a three-pointer from Petticord and two free throws from Adams with 4:32 remaining. RU remained in control 49-40.
  • The Scarlet Knights pushed their lead to double digits with a three-point play from Adams and a jumper from Sidibe.
  • A three ball from Lacey negated three straight free throws by the Cougars, but Petticord added another right after along with a Perkins layup.
  • Charleston then ended the third quarter with four straight made baskets at the charity stripe, but RU stayed up, 62-49.
  • Lacey and Adams continued to help the Scarlet Knights pull away with drained shots as the fourth quarter opened.
  • As both teams continued to swap trips up and down the floor, RU kept gaining ground, pushing their lead to 20 thanks to a three-pointer and fast break jumper from Lacey with just over seven minutes to go.
  • Rutgers was able to hold off late game heroics from the Cougars with four consecutive three-point shots from Perkins, Petticord and Lacey.
  • In the final moments, Petticord added two more shots beyond the arc to solidify a massive 89-67 victory and help Rutgers advance to the WNIT Great 8.
