INDIANAPOLIS – The No. 15-seeded Rutgers women's basketball team (11-19, 3-15 B1G) couldn't get past No. 10 seed Nebraska (20-10, 10-8 B1G), falling 84-60 in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament on Wednesday night.
Destiny Adams paced all players on the floor with 25 points, in addition to 10 rebounds for her 15th double-double.
Awa Sidibe and Mya Petticord also netted 11 points each.
How it Happened
- Nebraska started off with six consecutive points to force a Scarlet Knights timeout at the 8:27 mark.
- Neither team scored again until 6:18, when Destiny Adams battled through for a layup. Each team added a bucket each before Adams hit two more at the line to put the contest within two points, 8-6.
- Mya Petticord gave Rutgers its first lead of the night, 9-8, with a three at the top of the key with 3:30 to play.
- However, the Cornhuskers powered back with a 14-2 run to regain the 22-11 edge.
- Petticord hit a jumper at the buzzer, but Nebraska still took the nine-point lead into the second 10 minutes of play.
- Both teams battled hard on defense, as the first field goal came at the 6:27 mark with a three from the Cornhuskers.
- Lisa Thompson added a score for the Scarlet Knights, but the opposition answered with another deep ball to stay on top, 29-15, just before the 4:49 media timeout.
- Out of the stop, both teams scored five points apiece to keep the difference. Nebraska hit a three-pointer, but Sidibe and Adams combined for four points to continue to keep it close.
- The Cornhuskers ended the opening half with a pair of shots at the charity stripe to maintain the 39-24 advantage going into the locker room.
- Adams got things going out of halftime with a turnaround jumper to cut the deficit to 13. However, Nebraska hit back-to-back threes to go back up, 45-26 and force a Rutgers timeout with 8:29 to play.
- After the break, Petticord hit her second shot from beyond the arc. The Cornhuskers contributed a field goal, but Adams came up big with a three-point play.
- The opponent went on a 4-0 stretch going into the 4:37 media timeout to stay in control, 51-32.
- Petticord hit another big three and Adams added a pair of free throws, but Nebraska also netted four points to stay on top by 18. They went onto end the third quarter on an 8-0 run to stay up, 61-37.
- Nebraska started the final quarter off with three points but the Scarlet Knights came back to outscore the opponent 11-4, with just under seven minutes to play.
- However, the Cornhuskers put together a 5-0 run to force another timeout from RU with 5:42 to go.
- Both teams traded points through the middle of the quarter. Despite consecutive threes from Nebraska, Rutgers outscored the opponent 8-6 in the final minutes. The Cornhuskers still came out on top however, 84-60.
Knights Notes
- Destiny Adams recorded her 15th double-double of the season, third in a row and 23rd of her career against Nebraska with 25 points and 10 rebounds. She has reached double-digits in 26 games this season including 17 of the last 18 outings.
- Petticord knocked down three threes for the second consecutive game and tie her season high. She has hit multiple deep balls in 13 outings this season and in six of the last seven games.
- Petticord has reached 10+ points in six games this season, including the most recent three.
- Awa Sidibe has also netted 11 points against the Cornhuskers, her third double digit performance in a row. She has reached double digit scoring four times.
- Rutgers bested Nebraska in steals, 9-6.
