COLUMBUS, Ohio – Rutgers women's golf took home fourth place out of 13 teams at the Therese Hession Buckeye Invitational. The Scarlet Knights improved on their team score in each round and finished ahead of a pair of Big Ten teams in Indiana and Wisconsin.
Individually,
Grace Lu led the charge with an 11th-place finish. A pair of teammates were right behind, with
Lorena Rossettin at T12 and
Emily James in T14.
"While we dropped a couple shots coming in, I'm happy we held our position on the leaderboard." head coach
Kari Williams said. "This tournament is always a good challenge for us before heading to Big Tens and we'll have a few good days of practice before heading down to Maryland."
Round 3 – Sunday, April 13th
Weather: Partly Cloudy, Temps in mid 40s, 5-15 mph winds
Grace Lu put together a strong closing round to move up move spots on the final day and finish just outside the top 10 in 11th place. In her final round, Lu used a run of four birdies in a seven-hole span to play the back nine under par and shoot an even-par 72 on the day.
Lorena Rossettin held firm to finish the tournament in a tie for 12th. Rossettin rolled in four birdies on the day and shot a 2-over 74 for the round.
Emily James had the low round of the day for a Scarlet Knight and the third-lowest score in the field with a 2-under 70 to move up 16 spots and finish inside the top-15 at T14. James played a clean round and capitalized on her scoring opportunities, picking up four birdies, 12 pars and playing the back nine 2-under par.
"I felt good out on the course today and had all aspects of my game working," James said. "My chipping was really sharp and gave me a lot of confidence hitting my approach shots. This is a tough course and we're happy with how hard we competed."
Joline Truong shot a 7-over 79 in the final round, with birdies on 3 and 14. She finished the event T26.
Lucrezia Rossettin rounded out the RU competitors, shooting a 10-over 82 in the final round to finish T53.
Rounds 1 & 2 – Saturday, April 12th
Weather: Partly Cloudy, Temps in mid 40s, 5-15 mph winds
Lorena Rossettin is just outside the top 10 with an 8-over 152 (77-75) on day one. She picked up a pair of birdies in each of the first two rounds.
Truong matched her with an identical 8-over 152 (77-75), including four birdies in her second round and six on the day to lead the team.
Grace Lu was just one behind with a 9-over 153 (77-76), carding two birdies on the day and 24 pars.
Emily James shot a 13-over 157 (77-80) to finish the day in a tie for 30th. James birdied 7 in her first round and matched Lu with 24 pars on the day.
Lucrezia Rossettin rounded out the competitors for RU, finishing the day in a tie for 44th with a 16-over 160 (84-76). She had a pair of birdies in the first round and three on the day.
As a team, Rutgers led the field in par 5 scoring, collectively playing the holes 2-under par.
"The team did a good job today buckling down when it got tough," head coach
Kari Williams said. "They were patient through the long day and made a lot of pars when we needed them down the stretch. This is a championship-level course and an excellent test for us to prepare for Big Tens. It was a solid day for us and we'll look to keep it going in round three."
