Serrao, 4x400 Relay Set School Records at Quaker Invitational
Jan 17 | Track & Field
PHILADELPHIA – Rutgers track and field earned school records for the second-straight week as the Scarlet Knights set marks in the men's 60-meter hurdles and women's 4x400-meter relay at the Quaker Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 17 at the Ott Center in Philadelphia.
"Great effort this weekend," said Bobby Farrell, director of track and field & cross country. "I'm very pleased with where we are this early in the season. We had a lot more PRs, top-10 performances and two big records broken. There is much more work ahead of us so we're excited to get back to practice Monday."
The Quaker Invitational marked the debut for several track events for the Scarlet Knights with a number of top-10 all-time times to go along with the two school records.
The school record time in the 60-meter hurdles stood at 7.71 which Chris Serrao set last season. He broke that twice on Saturday, first running a time of 7.68 in prelims and then setting both an Ott Center and Rutgers record in the finals as he crossed the finish line first in 7.55, a time that ranks second in the NCAA.
Charlee Crawford, Celine-Jada Brown, Paige Floriea and Success Duruzor combined in the 4x400-meter to take down a record that stood for nearly 13 years. The group ran 3:36.29 to win the event and eclipse the mark previously set by the relay team of Gabrielle Farquharson, Ekene Ugboaja, Tylia Gillon and Asha Ruth in March 2013.
The men's squad also picked up a win in the 4x400-meter relay with Bryce Tucker, Jaylin Santiago, Gabrielle Rodriguez and Lathan Brown running a first-place time of 3:12.45.
Shamali Whittle finished third in the 60-meter, running a time of 6.77, while Bryce Tucker placed third in the 500-meter. Micah Lawson went second in the mile with a time of 4:09.33 and took third in the 800-meter in 1:52.44. Gabriel Rodriguez placed third in the 1,000-meter, running 2:24.38.
On the women's side, Sierra Latonnel won the 400-meter in 55.78. Rutgers 2-3-4 in the 60-meter with Cynthia Boakye leading the way in second with a time of 7.47, followed by Duruzor and Crawford in third and fourth, respectively in 7.50. Cassidy Kidd placed fifth in the 1,000-meter with a time of 2:55.74.
The Scarlet Knights duplicated their solid showing in the field events a week ago, adding three event wins.
Malachi Yehudah won the high jump, clearing 2.11 (6' 11"), while the O'Sullivan brothers went 1-2 in the pole vault. Kevin O'Sullivan hit the mark of 5.45m (17' 10.5") on his first try to capture the top spot in the event, followed by Brian O'Sullivan in second at the same height. Andrew Krall finished second in the weight throw, recording a distance of 19.24m (63' 1.5").
The women's long jump went 1-2 for the Scarlet Knights with Brown finishing first with a distance of 6.40m (21'), while Floriea took second with a leap of 6.01m (19' 8.75"). Tey'ana Ames placed third in the shot put with a throw of 14.70m (48' 2.75").
