PRINCETON, N.J. – Freshman CJ Huerta (149) finished third to highlight action for Rutgers wrestling on Sunday at the Princeton Open. Huerta picked ranked victories over No. 31 Matthew Martino (Princeton) and No. 32 Carson DesRosier (Binghamton) in his first collegiate action.
Huerta was one of two Scarlet Knights to place at the Princeton Open, as freshman Alex Reyes (197) finished fourth in his RU debut. Six freshmen – Huerta, Reyes, Charlie Esposito (125), Rhett Washleski (149), Tyler Palumbo (184) and Alex Bajoras (HWT) – competed in their first collegiate tournaments.
Huerta faced Martino – a 2026 NCAA qualifier – in the round of 16, using two takedowns and a four-point near fall in the third period to secure the 15-3 major decision. After losing to Jack Consiglio (Stanford) in the semifinals, Huerta muscled a 10-7 decision over DesRosier – also an NCAA qualifier last season at the Citadel – en route to his bronze.
Reyes used back-to-back wins on the front side of the bracket to advance to the semifinals, where he lost to No. 6 Angelo Posada (Stanford), a 2026 NCAA All-American. Washleski also faced a ranked foe on Sunday with his quarterfinal matchup against No. 7 Cross Wasilewski (Penn).
Ranked No. 20 in the NWCA Preseason Coaches Poll, Rutgers opens its dual season on Saturday at Journeymen WrangleMania against LIU (2 p.m.) and Navy (4 p.m.) in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
