Indiana Takes Series Opener From Softball

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Rutgers softball dropped its series opener with Indiana on Friday night at Andy Mohr Field as the Hoosiers topped the Scarlet Knights, 12-5, in five innings.
RU's Samamtha Delhoyo belted her first career home run in the fifth for the Scarlet Knights to trail, 6-2, but the Hoosiers came back with six runs on four hits, including a walk-off home run for the run-rule victory.
The loss dropped Rutgers to 13-11 on the year and evened its Big Ten record at 2-2.

- Sophomore Samantha Delhoyo captured her first career home run and RU's 21st of the season with her two-run shot in the fifth.
- Sophomore Riley Hwang collected the Scarlet Knights' other hit.
- Junior Brooke Shifflett dropped to 5-4 on the year in the loss. She tossed 4.2 innings, giving up 11 hits and four walks with four strikeouts.

- Indiana kicked off the contest with a lead-off, stand-up double down the left field from Aly Van Brandt, who would go on to score the first run of the evening on an Avery Parker sac fly to center.
- The Hoosiers plated two unearned runs in the second. Hannah Haberstroh singled to lead off and advanced to third as Cassidy Kettleman reached on an error. Both players used a double steal for a run and Aly VanBrandt followed with an RBI single to push the hosts out to a 3-0 lead.
- A pair of Hoosiers were aboard on a walk and a base hit for Ally Goins to collect a three-run home run and push Indiana ahead 6-0.
- Rutgers got onto the scoreboard in the fifth. Baileigh Burtis reached on an error at third and Samantha Delhoyo followed with her first career home run to straightaway center for the Scarlet Knights to trail 6-2.

- Indiana, however, came back with six runs on four hits, including a walk-off grand slam. A pair of singles and a walk loaded the bases and runs came home on the next four Hoosier batters. Alli Gavin added a run on a fielder's choice at short, VanBrandt singled to the circle for an RBI, Alex Cooper deposited a run on a ground out to second and Avery Parker cleared the bases and ended the game with a home run.

The series between the Scarlet Knights and Hoosiers continues on Saturday, March 14 at 2 p.m. Sunday's game has been moved up to an 11 a.m. start. Both games will be streamed on B1G+ with live stats on Statbroadcast.
