BAYONNE, N.J. - Rutgers men's golf opgened its season in style this weekend, welcoming eight visiting programs to Bayonne Golf Club for the first-ever New York Harbor Cup — and before a single competitive shot was struck, the Scarlet Knights made sure Night 1 set the tone for the tournament to come.
On Sunday evening, August 30, the club's clubhouse and grounds filled with Rutgers athletic department staff, donors, and members of the Scarlet Knights faithful for a welcome dinner ahead of Sunday's opening round.
Rutgers Director of Athletics Keli Zinn was on hand, alongside presenting sponsor Morgan Stanley, apparel sponsor Dunning, and leadership from Bayonne Golf Club, which is hosting the event for the first time. Dinner and drinks flowed as the crowd mingled against a backdrop that needed no introduction: the Manhattan skyline rising across New York Harbor, with the Statue of Liberty visible in the distance — prompting the program's own social media caption to call it simply "the best view in the world."
Teams squared off in a putting green competition and a long-drive contest off the tee box, giving golfers from Rutgers, Kansas, Marquette, Little Rock, Michigan State, Purdue, Nebraska, South Florida, and West Virginia a chance to show off in front of the assembled sponsors and supporters before the tournament's real stakes began.
