THE PSYCHOLOGICAL EXPERIENCE OF BEING A STUDENT-ATHLETE
The experience of being a student-athlete--- whether at Rutgers or anywhere else for that matter --- is very much a psychological one.
As a psychological experience, a range of mental and emotional factors influence a student-athlete’s performance and well being.
These factors include ones such as the following:
(a) Being motivated to be a team member,
(b) Being emotionally ready to compete,
(c) Meeting performance expectations,
(d) Avoiding unwanted places that can derail one's performance and career,
(e) Dealing with failure and success, and
(f) Other factors
These factors, and others like them, affect all student-athletes--- for better or worse--- depending upon how mentally skilled he or she is in addressing them.
