PURPOSE AND GOALS OF THE RUTGERS SPORT PSYCHOLOGY PROGRAM
The Rutgers Sport Psychology Program is a resource for student-athletes, coaches, athletic support staff, and teams in meeting the basic psychological challenges of athletic competition.
The purpose of the Rutgers Sport Psychology Program is to educate and train student-athletes so that each one can deal effectively with the challenges of competition and be successful in the larger sphere of sport and life itself .
The primary goals of the Rutgers Sport Psychology Program for the student-athlete are:
1. To assist the student-athlete to become aware of their strong points and limitations as a person and as a performer.
2. To assist the student-athlete to implement an effective and efficient approach to their mental and emotional preparation for compeition.
3. To help the student-athlete to acquire specific skills so that he/she can compete with mind in the moment, remain focused on the competitive task at hand, and sustain this kind of presence throughout the contest, especially under competitive pressure.
4. To provide the student-athlete with effective methods for dealing honestly with their performance results and to use that information to make adjustments to their sport.
5. To enable athletic teams to develop as cohesive units where an authentic mutual accountability exists and where there is a desire to buy into something that is larger than each individual.
6. To provide guidance and professional advice to coaches and athletic support staff in meeting psychological needs of student-athletes
