Matt Hewitt is in his seventh year with Rutgers football. He has also worked as defensive assistant (2022), assistant director of recruiting (2020-21), an offensive quality control coach (2019) and a recruiting assistant (2017-18) during his tenure “On the Banks.”

As part of the recruiting staff, Hewitt helped the Scarlet Knights secure the program’s highest-ranked class in the Big Ten era according to ESPN and 247Sports in 2022.

Prior to his arrival in Piscataway in 2017, Hewitt spent the summer with the Baltimore Ravens under the Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship, where he served as an assistant linebackers coach.

Hewitt began his collegiate coaching career in 2014 as the safeties and assistant special teams coach at William Paterson. He later coached tight ends at Bergen Catholic High School in 2015 and returned to college as a defensive quality control coach at Dartmouth College from 2015-16. The Big Green boasted the top ranked scoring defense, red zone defense and was fifth in total defense in the FCS en route to the 2015 Ivy League Championship.

In addition to his collegiate experience, Hewitt has served additional stints on the professional level, including the National Football League, Canadian Football League, Arena Football League and Indoor Football League. He was with the Buffalo Bills in 2008, Toronto Argonauts in 2009 and Calgary Stampede in 2011.

Hewitt played scholastically at Dwight Morrow High School in Englewood, New Jersey, before going on to Alfred State College. Hewitt later transferred to Arkansas, where he advanced to the Capital One Bowl in 2006 and AT&T Cotton Bowl in 2007. He was named to the Associated Press Second Team All-SEC in 2007.

Hewitt and Fatimah Holmes are the parents to three children, Josiah, Amiyah and Mariah.
