Jim Mitchell has completed four seasons with the Scarlet Knights, where he runs the team's offense.In the past three seasons with Mitchell serving as offensive coordinator, the team has compiled a 30-15 record.
In 2018, Rutgers averaged 11.2 goals per game. Attackman Jules Heningburg led the Big Ten with 37 goals and 35 assists, earning First Team All-Big Ten and Second Team All-American honors. Heningburg's 72 points was the 4th most in a single season in Rutgers history. Additionally, Kieran Mullins added 31 goals and 48 points, leading the Big Ten with 15 goals in conference games.
In 2017, Mitchell's offense was 14th in the nation with 11.71 goals per game. Freshman Kieran Mullins led the team offensively, as the Second Team All-Big Ten selection had 35 goals and 51 points, while junior attackman Jules Heningburg was named an Honorable Mention All-American with 20 goals and 26 assists for 46 points.
In 2016, Mitchell oversaw a high-powered offensive scored 12.44 goals per game, which ranked 9th in the NCAA, and were eighth nationally with 20.0 points per game. Senior Scott Bieda was named a Third Team All-American, the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year, a unanimous First Team All-Big Ten Selection, All-ECAC and a Tewaaraton Award Semifinalist. He had 28 goals, 38 assists and 66 points, leading the Big Ten in both assists and points. Sophomore Jules Heningburg was a First Team All-Big Ten selection. He scored 39 goals with 21 assists for 60 points, and led Big Ten with 18 goals and 26 points in conference games alone. Adam Charalambides was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year. The Canadian attackman scored 43 goals, tied for fifth most in a season at RU history, and most for a first-year player.
Mitchell was the defensive coordinator in 2015, where RU earned five wins in its first season as a Big Ten member, including a victory over No. 10 Ohio State.
Mitchell joined the Scarlet Knights' coaching staff after spending the past three seasons as an assistant coach at Bellarmine University in Louisville, Ky.
While at Bellarmine, Mitchell was the defensive coordinator, goalie coach, and recruiting coordinator. His defense ranked eighth and 13th in the NCAA in goals against average in each the past two seasons. Mitchell coached the first two All-Americans in Bellarmine lacrosse history: Dillon Ward and Bobby Schmitt. Under Mitchell's tutelage, Ward led the nation in save percentage in 2013 (66%), and was named First Team All-ECAC, ECAC Goalie of the Year and a Tewaaraton Trophy nominee. In 2014, Schmitt was named First Team All-ECAC and ECAC Specialist of the Year.
Prior to Bellarmine, Mitchell was an assistant at Duke University in 2011. Serving as goalie coach and working with the defense, Mitchell helped guide Duke to the NCAA Final Four and an ACC Regular Season championship, while coaching six All-Americans.
Mitchell also spent two seasons as the defensive coordinator at Roanoke College, with the Maroons compiling a 35-5 record during his tenure there. The 2010 squad featured eight All-Americans as he guided DIII USILA Defenseman of the Year Sam Love and USILA Long Stick Midfielder of the Year Steve Simmons. In 2009, he coached six All-Americans and helped lead Roanoke to an undefeated regular season and its first No. 1 national ranking in Division III play.
Mitchell earned his bachelor's degree in psychology from St. Mary's College of Maryland in 2006, as well as a Master's in education from Goucher College. At Goucher Mitchell was an assistant coach for the 2007 and 2008 seasons.
Mitchell was a midfielder for St. Mary's, captaining the squad as a senior and helping lead the squad to the program's highest national ranking in school history.
