Ryan Cabiles was hired in April 2026 and now leads the day-to-day strength and conditioning program for Rutgers Women's Basketball.
The previous year, he reunited with former Portland-area student-athletes Ben Sullivan and Ime Udoka with the Houston Rockets, serving as an Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach for the 2025 NBA Summer League, while also spending the 2025-2026 season with the NYS Class C Sectional Champions Bishop Ludden-Grimes Boys Basketball team. Cabiles spent 18 years at Syracuse University as Director of Strength and Conditioning for Basketball, working with the women's team from 2007-2023 and the men's team from 2007-2025; during that span, both programs combined for 20 NCAA appearances, 16 NBA Draft picks, 5 WNBA Draft picks, a Women's Basketball National Runner-up finish in 2016, and two Men's Basketball Final Fours (2013, 2016). In 2016, Syracuse's Men's and Women's programs simultaneously earned Final Four trips, making Cabiles the only strength and conditioning professional to achieve that feat as the primary strength and conditioning coach for both squads, and in his second year with the program, he was part of the Instant Classic-6 overtime game against UConn in the 2009 Big East Men's Basketball Tournament.
Before Syracuse, Cabiles was the first Strength and Conditioning Coach for University of Portland Athletics, elevating the program to complete coverage by 2004, a period during which the Women's Soccer team won two NCAA Championships (2002, 2005). He began his career with the Portland Trail Blazers as a strength and conditioning intern with the 1999 Pacific Division Champions before becoming a strength and conditioning assistant from 2001-2007, and during the summers from 2000-2002 he served as Head Strength and Conditioning Coach with the first edition of the WNBA's Portland Fire. Cabiles got his collegiate athletics start at UNLV, his alma mater, spending the 1999-2000 season as strength and conditioning coach for the men's basketball team and the men's and women's tennis teams, the same year Men's Basketball won the Mountain West Conference Tournament and Women's Tennis won the Mountain West Conference Championship. His other experiences include serving as a tester at the NBA Combine, Tim Grgurich's Basketball Camp in Las Vegas, and Michael Jordan's Senior Flight School in Las Vegas. Cabiles is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), and in February 2025 he earned the honor of Registered Strength and Conditioning Coach Emeritus (RSCC*E), celebrating more than 25 years as a strength and conditioning professional; his other certifications include NASM-PES, CES, FMS Level 1, CAFS, and Level 1 TPI Certified.
