At the Big Ten level, Hickey serves as one of Rutgers' representatives to the Big Ten Sports Management Committee and the Big Ten Joint Group.

In her tenure at Rutgers, Hickey has played an integral role in the development of the life skills program, including in the creation of the Rutgers Leadership Academy and its transition to what is now the Scarlet Knights For Life program.  She also oversaw the department’s NCAA compliance efforts for 12 years beginning in 1999.

Outside of Rutgers, Hickey currently serves on the NCAA Nominating Committee.  She served as a board member for the National Association for Athletics Compliance (NAAC) from 2007 to 2013, including serving as NAAC's president from July 2011 to June 2012, and was the first chair of NAAC's Committee on Reasonable Standards, the committee charged with setting industry guidelines for campus compliance efforts. In addition, Hickey was a board member for the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators (now called Women Leaders in College Sports) from 2008 through 2010 and a member of the NCAA Management Council from 2002 through 2007. She served as the Management Council's chair in 2006-07 and as the chair of its Subcommittee on Legislative Review from 2002 through 2006.  Outside of the Athletics world, from 2017-2020, Hickey served as Trustee on the Board of Georgian Court University.

In May 2007 and May 2008, Hickey served as a facilitator at the NCAA Student-Athlete Development Conference, a forum for Division I, II and III student-athletes to learn about and enhance their leadership, communication, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.

In 2007, Hickey was named the Administrator of the Year for Division I-A by the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators. In 2011, Hickey was awarded NAAC's Frank Kara Leadership Award for her efforts in establishing Reasonable Standards for compliance.

Prior to her appointment at Rutgers, Hickey served the Big East Conference as assistant director for compliance from August 1996 to December 1998 and was the Southern Conference's assistant commissioner for compliance from June 1995 to July 1996.
