Scarlet Knight alumna Shannon Haines, a member of Justin Price’s 2025 CRCA Regional Staff of the Year, has served as an assistant coach for Rutgers women’s rowing since 2022.
Since becoming a Scarlet Knight assistant in 2022, Rutgers has produced 13 CRCA All-Americans and sent eigth Scarlet Knights to the U23 World Championships, winning a total of seven medals.
In 2026, Haines helped the Scarlet Knights return to the NCAA Championships for the seventh consecutive season with the Varsity 4 tying for the highest finish by a boat in program history with a fourth-place performance and coming in 1.328 seconds away from reaching the podium for the first time in school history. The Scarlet Knights finished 11th nationally and were Big Ten runner-ups for the second-straight season, including gold for the 3rd Varsity 8. Three Scarlet Knights were named CRCA All-Americans and RU earned a program-record nine Big Ten Boat of the Week honors. Additionally, RU continued to shine on the international stage with a pair of medals at the 2026 U23 World Championships.
As a member of Justin Price’s CRCA Regional Staff of the Year in 2025, a region that includes the entire Big Ten Conference, along with independent institutions, Rutgers produced the most successful season in the 50 years of the varsity program. RU placed eighth at the 2025 NCAA Championships, which included a fifth-place finish for the Varsity 4, an eighth-place performance from the Varsity 8 and the 2nd Varsity 8 claiming 13th. Additionally, the Scarlet Knights had their best-ever Big Ten showing as conference runner-up while winning a program-record six medals.
Altogether, the 2025 campaign saw Rutgers have four student-athletes named CRCA All-Americans and five earn All-Big Ten honors, with a pair of nods to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team, including Big Ten Freshman of the Year, Beatrice Colclough.
Rutgers’ 2024-25 season also included winning the Island Challenge Cup in the first-ever appearance at the prestigious Henley Royal Regatta and four Scarlet Knights competing for their home countries at the U23 World Championships.
Prior to returning to her alma mater, Haines has coached since her graduation “On The Banks” at various levels of the sport, including a stint as head coach at James Madison High School in Virginia and at Resilient Rowing Club as an administrator and assistant coach since 2014.
Haines also has stops at the U.S. Junior National Team Small Boats Camp and the University of Tennessee Club Crew Team.
A Scarlet Knight rower from 2012-16, Haines was a Second Team All-Big East honoree and earned a mention on the CRCA All-Region First Team in 2013.
Haines earned her bachelor’s in public health from Rutgers in 2016 and a master’s in public health from George Washington in 2019.
