Sam Mattis, a University of Pennsylvania men's track & field alumnus and USATF national champion, joins the Rutgers staff as a volunteer assistant coach. A three-time NCAA All-American, Mattis racked up four Ivy League Heptagonal individual championships and four first-team All-Ivy awards while at Penn.

As a junior, Mattis captured the 2015 NCAA Championship in the men's discus. The next year, as a senior, Mattis recorded a national runner-up finish after setting the U.S. collegiate record earlier in the season with a mark of 67.45m. He finished fifth as a sophomore at the national meet.

Mattis, a 2016 Wharton graduate, was named the 2015 USTFCCCA Male Field Scholar Athlete of the Year, was a four-time USTFCCCA Academic All-American and was placed on the Bowerman Watch List – the award given to the year's best student-athletic in collegiate track & field.

In July 2019, Mattis claimed the USATF Outdoor Championship title in the discus with a throw of 66.19 (218' 9"). He went on to reach the finals at the 2019 IAAF World Athletics Championships, finishing 11th in the competition.
