Rob Shutte enters his 14th season at the helm of the Rutgers men’s golf program in 2025-26, bringing a legacy of competitive excellence and academic achievement. Since his appointment on February 14, 2012, Shutte has guided the Scarlet Knights through three conference transitions, including their inaugural Big Ten season in 2014-15, and has firmly established Rutgers as a rising force in the Northeast Region, finishing the #1 ranked team in the Northeast in 2021, 2023, and 2024.
Under Shutte’s leadership, Rutgers has produced 19 PING All-Region selections and the program’s first Big Ten Player of the Year in Christopher Gotterup (2020). Gotterup also became the program’s first All-American since 2005 and qualified for the 2021 NCAA East Regional, marking Rutgers’ return to NCAA postseason play for the first time in over 15 years.
Shutte was named the 2020 and 2023 Golfweek Division I Northeast Coach of the Year.
In 2019-20, Gotterup delivered one of the most dominant seasons in program history, finishing with a 70.39 adjusted scoring average, ranking No. 23 nationally and first in the Big Ten. He capped the fall with three consecutive top-five finishes, including an eight-shot victory at the Fighting Irish Classic. The current PGA Tour Player, Gotterup won his first PGA Tour Event at the 2024 Myrtle Beach Classic.
In the classroom, Shutte has cultivated a culture of academic excellence. A total of 16 student-athletes have earned Academic All-American honors under his guidance as well and 16 student-athletes were also recognized as Big Ten Distinguished Scholars.
Beyond competition, Shutte emphasized service and remembrance. In 2013, he helped create the Folds of Honor Military Tribute Program which allows collegiate golf programs to honor fallen or severely wounded American soldiers by carrying a golf bag displaying the service member's name, rank, and branch of service.
Before joining Rutgers, Shutte revitalized programs at Muhlenberg College (men’s) and Lehigh University (women’s).
A proud Rutgers legacy, Shutte’s father, Bob, was a three-year letterwinner in both football and baseball for the Scarlet Knights. His mother, Catherine, is also a Rutgers alumna and former student sportswriter for The Daily Targum.
Shutte (pronounced SHOOT-e) earned his bachelor’s degree in Parks and Recreation Management from Penn State University in 2003. He and his wife, Caitlin, are proud parents of their three children: Charlie, Henry, and Claire.
