Scott Scherer was promoted to assistant general manager and director of men’s basketball operations in October 2026. He enters his first season in the role and his 11th with the Rutgers men’s basketball program.
Scherer was hired as director of basketball administration in August 2022 and held that position for four seasons. Before that, he spent two years as a graduate assistant and four years as a student manager, serving as head manager in his final two seasons.
Scherer works closely with the coaching and support staff on all aspects of the program, including film breakdown, opponent scouting, practice execution and administrative operations. He assists General Manager Rob Sullivan with roster construction, recruiting, and name, image and likeness (NIL) efforts. He also oversees daily content and social media across all Rutgers men’s basketball platforms.
A key behind-the-scenes contributor to the Scarlet Knights’ success over the past decade, Scherer has been part of some of the program’s biggest moments. The 2020-21 Scarlet Knights were the first Rutgers team since 1990-91 to earn an NCAA Tournament berth, and their first-round win over Clemson was the program’s first NCAA Tournament victory since 1982-83. Rutgers returned to the NCAA Tournament in 2022, its first consecutive appearances since 1975 and 1976.
Scherer earned his bachelor’s degree in finance from Rutgers in 2020, graduating with a 3.57 GPA and Dean’s List honors. He also holds a Master of Education (M.Ed.) in adult and continuing education and teaching. His additional experience includes serving as camp manager at UConn’s 2019 NCAA camp, head runner for Hoop Group’s Team Tournaments, and a coach at the Super Soph Camp.
A native of Manalapan, N.J., Scherer played varsity basketball and was a member of the National Honor Society at Manalapan High School.
