ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Rutgers football (3-5, 2-3) fell to RV/25 Michigan (6-2, 3-2), 35-14, in front of a crowd of 111,213 Saturday afternoon at Michigan Stadium.
The Scarlet Knight defense held the Wolverines to just 137 passing yards and won the turnover battle, 1-0, thanks to a first-quarter interception by sophomore
Jawuan Harris. On offense, fifth-year senior
Janarion Grant led RU with 71 rushing yards and a touchdown, while fifth-year senior
Gus Edwards also added a score.Â
The Rutgers defense held its own in the first quarter, keeping UM out of the end zone in the first 15 minutes of play. Harris recorded his second interception of the season when he picked off Michigan's John O'Korn at the 6:48 mark in the opening quarter, undercutting the route for the turnover.
After the Wolverines scored the first touchdown of the contest, Grant sparked the offense in the second quarter, as he took a direct snap 65 yards for a score with 10:52 left in the first half. Grant's longest run of his career tied the score at 7-7.
Michigan responded with 14-straight points to take a 21-7 lead into the locker room.
A touchdown on Michigan's opening drive in the third quarter increased its lead, but Rutgers answered on the following series. Junior
Giovanni Rescigno orchestrated an 11-play, 75-yard scoring drive, capped by a two-yard touchdown run by Edwards
to make it 28-14 with 7:01 left in the quarter.
Rescigno was 3-of-4 passing for 61 yards during the drive, which included a one-handed, 21-yard catch in Wolverine territory by freshman
Hunter Hayek. Junior
Jerome Washington also had an impressive career-long 30-yard reception down the middle of the field during the scoring series.
Michigan charged down the field on the next possession, but missed a 37-yard field goal with just a minute left in the third to give the ball back to RU and keep the score steady into the fourth quarter. However, the Wolverines were able to control most of the game clock in the closing minutes to secure the win.
The Scarlet Knights return to High Point Solutions Stadium to host Maryland next Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET on Big Ten Network.
