Men’s Hoops Hosts Metro Foe Fordham Tuesday Night
Dec 11 | Men's Basketball
PISCATAWAY – Rutgers (8-3) will work to improve to 17-1 in non-conference home games under Steve Pikiell when it welcomes Fordham (4-5) to the RAC on Tuesday evening in the third of five straight games versus metro foes at the RAC. Rutgers is in the midst of playing four of seven contests against opponents ranked or receiving votes. The Scarlet Knights are also in the process of playing five games in 10 days.
It will be "Finals Stress Busters Night" for Rutgers students, with dog petting and massages available to those students attending. A Caribbean Fusion dance performance will take place at halftime.
Tuesday's game will be televised live on ESPNU, with Dave Leno calling the action and Julianne Viani providing the analysis. On the radio, the contest will be broadcast live on the Rutgers IMG Sports Network, WOR 710 AM in New York and WCTC 1450 AM in New Brunswick, as well as on Sirius 145 and XM 195. Jerry Recco will serve as play-by-play announcer and Joe Boylan will provide commentary. WRSU (88.7 FM) will also broadcast the game.
Corey Sanders is three points (997) and Mike Williams is 21 points (979) shy of becoming the 42nd and 43rd players, respectively, to reach 1,000 career points in the history of Rutgers men's basketball.
RU leads the nation in rebounding (45.73) and offensive rebounding (16.0), while placing third among all D-I programs in both scoring defense (57.3) and total rebounds (503). The Scarlet Knights are first or second in the Big Ten in seven stat categories.
It will mark the 54th meeting between the schools, with the Rams holding a 27-26 advantage. RU has won four straight in the series and nine of the last 10, however, including a 68-53 win last December in the Holiday Festival at Madison Square Garden. RU is 21-11 all-time at home versus Fordham and 5-0 at the RAC.
Geo Baker scored 19 points and dished-out 11 assists to propel Rutgers in a convincing 92-54 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson Saturday night. RU's three-guard trio of Baker, Sanders (19) and Williams (17) combined to score 55 points on 20-of-32 shooting. Baker shot 7-of-11 en route to his first career double-double, which was comprised of the most assist by an RU player in a regulation game since Marquis Webb also had 11 versus Syracuse on Jan. 24, 2005. The Scarlet Knights shot 53.2 percent (33-of-62), while limiting FDU to a 32.2 percent (19-of-59) performance from the field. RU's effort was helped by a season-high 18 assists, its most since dishing-out 24 against CCSU on Dec. 6, 2016.
Deshawn Freeman is 2nd in the Big Ten in offensive rebounding (3.0), fifth in steals (1.64) and sixth in rebounding (8.2), while Baker leads all Big Ten freshmen in minutes-per-game (30.8).
Under third-year head coach Jeff Neubauer, Fordham ranks fourth nationally in steals (11.4), 13th in turnover margin (5.8), 23rd in turovers forced (18.0), 28th in 3-point FG% defense (28.8) and 34th in scoring defense (63.7). Preseason All-Atlantic 10 choice Joseph Chartouny is second among All D-I players in steals (3.78), while Will Tavares leads the team in scoring (17.8). The Rams earned a 76-68 home victory over St. Francis (N.Y.) on Saturday.
