Rutgers had an excellent scoring chance in the 25th minute when the Huskies committed a foul in the box on the Scarlet Knights’ corner kick. However, Huskie goalkeeper Maria Yatrakis saved Carli Lloyd’s (Delran, NJ) penalty kick to the lower left corner, and Connecticut was able to clear the rebound.
Connecticut broke the scoreless tie in the 61st minute when Sarah Popper sent a thru-ball up the left side and Kristen Graczyk scored to the lower-right corner. The Huskies got an insurance goal in the 82nd minute when Brittany Barakat punched in a rebound.
Rutgers was able to apply good pressure to the UConn defense, outshooting the Huskies 9-8 in the first half and leading in shots, 11-9, when the Huskies scored.
Rutgers senior Christine Caldwell (Wyckoff, NJ) made a season-high seven saves in the loss (6-5-2).
Rutgers was rated seventh by both Soccerbuzz and the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) in the Mid-Atlantic Region this week (Oct. 7). Connecticut was rated eighth by both the NSCAA and Soccerbuzz, and ninth by both SoccerTimes.com and Soccer America in the groups’ national polls. The Huskies also were rated first by both Soccerbuzz and the NSCAA in the Northeast Region.
Rutgers will continue cross-divisional play when the Knights travel to Jamaica, NY, to play St. John’s Tuesday, Oct. 15, at 7:30 p.m.
