UNIVERSITY PARK, PA – The Rutgers women’s
soccer team (9-7-2, 3-2-1 BIG EAST) ended its regular season with a 2-0 loss
to No. 10 Penn State (15-2-1, 9-1 Big Ten) Oct. 27 at PSU’s Jeffrey Field.
RU had the first scoring chance less than 11 minutes into the match when junior
Adrienne Dugandzic (Sicklerville, NJ) ran on to a ball from Carli Lloyd (Delran,
NJ) and drew the Penn State keeper out of the box. However, Dugandzic’s
shot went wide of the left post.
The Nittany Lions took advantage of their first opportunity, scoring in the
14th minute when Joanna Lohman scored off Christie Welsh’s pass.
Penn State scored again in the 53rd minute when PSU goalkeeper Amanda Brown
sent a free kick all the way up to Tiffany Weimer, who beat RU keeper Christine
Caldwell (Wyckoff, NJ) with a looping shot over her head.
Caldwell made six saves in the loss (7-7-2).
Rutgers was rated ninth by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America
(NSCAA) and 10th by Soccerbuzz in the Mid-Atlantic Region this week (Oct. 21).
Penn State was ranked 10th by the NSCAA, ninth by SoccerTimes.com, 10th by Soccer
America and 11th by Socceruzz in this week’s national polls. The Nittany
Lions also were rated second by the NSCAA and third by Soccerbuzz in the Mid-Atlantic
Region this week.
Rutgers, the third seed in the Mid-Atlantic Division, will play at Northeast
Division second seed Miami Saturday, Nov. 2, at 7:00 p.m. in the quarterfinal
round of the BIG EAST Tournament.
