There was no scoring through the first 37 minutes of action, until sophomore Chris Karcz (Clifton, NJ) scored on a breakaway for his sixth of the season at the 37:49 mark. In the 43rd minute, with just 1:07 remaining in the half, Karcz set up the first of back-to-back goals by Gros to extend the lead to 2-0 heading into halftime.
Gros then netted his second of the night :46 into the second half, while Sam Castellanos (Philadelphia, PA) scored at 50:54 for a 4-0 RU lead, with an assist credited to sophomore Anthony Schiavino (North Hunterdon, NJ). At the 62:36 mark, Gros completed his hat trick with an successful penalty kick, while Castellanos scored his second of the night at the 69:11 mark, on a feed from freshman Scott Gahagan (Old Bridge, NJ).
Leading 6-0, freshman Oliver Peterson (Arkley, England) scored off a feed from fellow freshman Yaron Shlomi (East Brunswick, NJ) at the 81:47 mark. Princeton spoiled the shutout in the 86th minute on a goal by Darren Spicer.
“We have scored 10 times in the last three halves, which is good to see,” said head coach Bob Reasso. “We have also seen some different people step up and assert themselves. We have two very important BIG EAST matches in a three-day span and we need to sustain this caliber of play.”
Rutgers registered 15 shots in the match, scoring on seven of them, while Princeton was held to just six. Ricky Zinter (Penfield, NY) made two saves in goal for Rutgers, while Erik While stopped four for the Tigers.
Rutgers, which has now scored 10 goals in the last two matches, will return to action this coming Saturday, when it travels to Morgantown, WV for a key, conference match-up with the Mountaineers.
