Mar 14 | Softball
Jenny Card (Miami, FL) hit her first home run of the season and two RBI to lead the Scarlet Knight offense. Last year, Card ended the season with a team-high six home runs and 22 RBI. Meaghan Asselta (Ramsey, NJ) also had an RBI and a stolen base. Jen Jacoby (Agoura Hills, CA) went three-for-four, with a stolen base and two runs and Nichole Cruz (Bremerton, WA) was two-for-three with one run and a stolen base..
The Scarlet Knights played a tight defensive game as well. Highlighting the defense was a double play in the fourth inning, started when shortstop Asselta picked up a ground ball and tossed it to Brittney Neer (Tallahassee, FL) at second base for the out at second. Neer fired it to Megan Antonucci (Warrington, PA) at first to get the double play and the final out of the fourth inning.
Brielle Cosentino picked up the win, pitching seven innings and giving up only eight hits and two walks. She had three strikeouts in 26 at bats.
Rutgers played Winthrop one time earlier in the season, defeating the Eagles 3-1 at the Florida State Invitational in Tallahassee, FL, on March 6, 2003.
The Scarlet Knights will play the second game of the Winthrop/Ringor Invitational tonight at 8 p.m. against Morgan State.
