PISCATAWAY, NJ - The Rutgers Softball team (13-8, 1-1 BIG EAST) split its first conference doubleheader today, losing 7-1 to St. John's in the opening game (14-14, 1-1 BIG EAST) and winning the nightcap 2-0.
St. John's had a five-run fifth inning, after both teams remained scoreless for the first four innings of the first game. The Red Storm got on the scoreboard when Jo Sherlock stole home. Megan Oliver had a triple to left field, sending home three runs. SJU earned one more run in the inning and then picked up two more in the sixth inning.
Nikki Childress (Roanoke, VA) went two-for-three in the game, scoring the only run off of a hit by Helen Smith (Tuscan, AZ), but it wasn't enough for a comeback. Smith went one-for-one with the RBI pinch hit single in the bottom of the seventh with two outs.
Andria Koehler (Sellersville, PA) pitched all seven innings, giving up six hits, seven runs (five earned) and two walks, striking out six.
Jenny Card (Miami, FL) batted in the only two runs scored in the second game, when the Scarlet Knights managed to come back and shut out SJU. Card's two-run single sent home Brittney Neer (Tallahasse, FL) and Childress, who reached base with a walk. Neer was hit by a pitch to get to first, stole second and then took third on the throw in from Meaghan Asselta's (Ramsey, NJ) fly ball to the outfield.
Brielle Cosentino (Carlstadt, NJ) picked up the win, pitching all seven innings. She allowed only three hits and one walk, striking out two.
The Scarlet Knights will host their second conference doubleheader on Sunday, March 30 against in-state rival Seton Hall, with the games beginning at noon. BOX 1 BOX 2
