Rutgers Defeats Winthrop 3-1 at FSU Invitational

Winthrop fell to 6-11 with the loss and the Scarlet Knights finished the first two days of the Invitational 1-2.
Nikki Childress (Roanoke, VA) went two-for-three with a single and a double. Crystal Vargas (Jersey City, NJ) also went two-for-three, with a single and a double. Andria Koehler (Sellersville, PA) picked up the win.
Both teams were scoreless until the fourth inning, when each team scored one
run. The Scarlet Knights broke open the game in the sixth inning with two runs,
making the final 3-1.
Florida State now holds a 7-0 record in all-time meetings against Rutgers. The
last time the Scarlet Knights played the Seminoles was on March 14, 2002 at
the Florida Atlantic Invitational, where RU fell to FSU, 5-1. The Seminoles
are currently ranked 14th in the ESPN/ASA rankings and 15th in NFCA rankings,
with a 15-6 record on the season.
Brielle Cosentino (Carlstadt, NJ) pitched six innings for the Scarlet Knights, giving up seven hits and six runs (five earned). Cosentino struck out one and walked seven and now has a record of 2-3.
The Scarlet Knights wrapped up the day with an 8-0 loss Penn State University in five innings. Penn State came into the tournament with a 3-7 record on the season and now leads the all-time meetings with Rutgers, 21-18. Pitcher Christina Gillman (Valencia, CA), gave up four runs in the first three innings.
The games on Sunday to wrap up the weekend will be determined based on the completion of bracket play.
