ANN ARNOR, MI – Rutgers senior Kristen Marino (Hillsborough,
NJ) led the three Scarlet Knight gymnasts competing in the NCAA Northeast Regional
with an eighth-place finish on vault Saturday evening at the University of
Michigan.
Marino posted a 9.800 on vault to tie for eighth place at the regional, while
tying for 18th place on bars with a 9.775. Junior Lisa Abrams (Mt. Ephraim,
NJ) represented RU as the individual qualifier on beam, finishing in a tie
for 20th place with a score of 9.800.
Sophomore Sveta Shterenberg (Sharon, MA) qualified as an all-around competitor,
finishing with a composite score of 37.900, tied for 17th place. For each individual
event, Shterenberg posted a 9.350 on vault (42nd), a 9.675 on bars (tied 30th),
a 9.125 on beam (40th) and a 9.750 on floor (tied 36th).
The overall team winner at the regional was host Michigan with a 196.825,
followed closely by Arizona State with a 196.725. Katie Rowland of Penn State
won the vault with a 9.950. Ashley Kelly of ASU and Lauren Mirkovich, Cali
Ryals and Jenny Deiley of Michigan tied for the bars title with a 9.900. ASU’s
Kelly won the beam event with a 9.925, while Penn State’s Rowland shared
the floor crown with Michigan’s Ryals and Iowa State’s Erin Dethloff,
each with a 9.950. Ryals was named the all-around champion, earning a collective
score of 39.500.
The Scarlet Knights completed the 2003 season with a 14-13 record and an eighth-place
finish at the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Championship.
