Rutgers Sweeps Monmouth 9-0, 11-1

PISCATAWAY, NJ - The Rutgers softball team (18-13, 2-6 BIG EAST) swept a doubleheader against Monmouth University on Tuesday, April 15, at the RU Stadium Softball Complex, 9-0 and 11-1.
Senior Andria Koehler (Sellersville, PA) pitched a complete-game five-inning shutout in game one, allowing five hits with no walks and three strikeouts. The win improved Koehler to 8-4 and was her third shutout of the season.
The Scarlet Knights had a three-run third inning, including a two-run single by Nichole Cruz (Bremerton, WA). Brittney Neer (Tallahassee, FL) and Cruz each ended the game with three RBI and Helen Smith (Tucson, AZ) went 1-for-2 with two RBI.
RU sealed the victory with a six-run fourth inning. Neer's triple to left center was the major blow of the inning, scoring three runs.
In the second game of the day, Courtney Love (Seabrook, TX) and Meaghan Asselta (Ramsey, NJ) each hit two-run doubles in the second and Smith added an RBI-single to give RU an early 7-0 lead.
Monmouth answered with a run in the top of the third, but RU scored four more runs in the fourth to claim the sweep. Crystal Vargas (Jersey City, NJ) had a two-run double to right field. Love finished the game 2-for-3, with one run and two RBI. Asselta was 1-for-1 with two walks, two runs and two RBI, and Smith and Vargas each went 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBI.
Brielle Cosentino (Carlstadt, NJ) pitched four innings to earn the win (6-7). She allowed three hits, one run and had two strikeouts, all without issuing a walk. Christine Czarnecki (Hamilton, NJ) pitched the last inning, striking out one of the three batters she faced.
The Scarlet Knights will play another in-state rival when they return to action on April 17, for a doubleheader at Rider University, first pitch is at 3 p.m.

??? Nikki Childress has had an offensive streak that left her tearing through the conference charts as this week she leads the BIG EAST in individual batting (.440), on base percentage (.494) and slugging percentage (.707) and is eighth in total bases with 53.
??? Brittney Neer is tied for first in stolen bases with 14. Meaghan Asselta and Jenny Card are eighth and ninth (respectively) in on-base percentage with .407 and .402. Andria Koehler is ranked sixth in complete games with 10.
??? Rutgers is sixth in the league in team batting and seventh in team pitching.
??? Today's game marked the 26th time that Monmouth and Rutgers have met under the guidance of head coach Pat Willis. Rutgers holds the edge in the all-time series, 26-1.
