CHESTNUT HILL, MA -- The Rutgers softball team (25-18,
7-9) defeated Boston College (27-17, 11-4), 4-2 and 5-2 in its first BIG EAST
sweep of the season at Shea Field on Tuesday, April 29.
In the first game, Nichole Cruz (Bremerton, WA) sent home Crystal Vargas (Jersey
City, NJ) on a line drive to left field for the first run of the game in the
top of the second inning. The Eagles tied the score with a solo home run in
the third.
Brittney Neer (Tallahassee, FL) broke the tie in the sixth inning with a long
sacrifice fly to left field to send home Jenny Card (Miami, FL) in the sixth
inning and Courtney Love (Seabrook, TX) sliced a pitch out to left center with
two outs to bring home Megan Antonucci (Warrington, PA) and increase the lead
to 3-1.
Vargas fought back from an 0-2 count, finishing her at bat with a bomb over
the left center field fence. Her seventh home run of the season, fifth in conference
action, made the score 4-2. Vargas was 1-for-3 in the game, with two runs and
one RBI. Card was 2-for-4 with one run scored and Cruz and Antonucci were each
1-for-2.
Andria Koehler (Sellersville, PA) pitched a complete game and improved to
12-5 with the win, allowing two runs (one earned), walking four and striking
out three.
In the second game, Love had stellar defensive efforts before leaving due
to injury. In right field, she turned a double play, running to catch a fly
and then gunning a throw to first base. In left field, she saved a long shot
by sacrificing herself into the wooden fence.
After four scoreless innings, the Scarlet Knights had an offensive surge of
power to take the lead. Neer drove in Antonucci with a rip up the middle, took
second on the throw and scored, followed by Love, on a catching error by the
first baseman. Cruz scored on a shot up the middle by Jen Jacoby (Agoura Hills,
CA) to make the score, 4-0. Childress had a hard base hit to the third baseman,
sending home Melissa Bradford (Pennsville, NJ) and the Scarlet Knights left
the inning with a five-run lead.
A two-run home run by the Eagles in the sixth inning made the score 5-2. Brielle
Cosentino (Carlstadt, NJ) improved to 8-9, pitching 5.2 innings in the nightcap,
allowing three hits, two runs, one walk and striking out one. Christina Gillman
(Valencia, CA) earned her first save of the season, pitching 1.1 innings and
allowing one hit.
The Scarlet Knights will continue the last leg of their season with a doubleheader
at the University of Delaware at 3 p.m. on April 30. The Scarlet Knights will
then travel to Syracuse, NY, to play the Orangewomen in a doubleheader at noon
on May, 2, followed by their final BIG EAST doubleheader against Notre Dame
at 11 a.m. on Sunday, May 4.
