SYRACUSE, NY - The Rutgers softball team (25-22, 7-11
BIG EAST) dropped two games to the Syracuse Orangewomen (16-24, 6-12 BIG EAST),
6-3 and 7-1 at the Syracuse
Softball Stadium at Skytop Saturday. The BIG EAST doubleheader
was originally scheduled fro Friday, May 2, but rain forced the postponement
to today.
In the first game of the day, the Orangewomen were the first to score, with
a two-run home run by Tanya Rose in the third inning, and never relinquished
the lead. SU had three runs in the fourth and one in the sixth to finish the
game, 6-3.
Crystal Vargas (Jersey City, NJ) led the offense for RU, going 2–for-4
in the game. Vargas hit a solo shot over the right center fence in the fourth
inning for her eighth home run of the year, making the score 2-1. In the sixth
inning, Vargas hit a double down the left line and scored the second run for
the Scarlet Knights off a single by Brittney Neer (Tallahassee, FL). Rutgers
mustered up one more run in the seventh inning when Meaghan Asselta (Ramsey,
NJ) scored on a hit from Nikki Childress (Roanoke, VA).
Andria Koehler (Sellersville, PA) started the first game, pitching 3.0 innings
and picking up the loss to fall to 12-8. Koehler allowed five runs on six hits
and two walks, striking out two. Christina Gillman (Valencia, CA) threw for
the last three innings, allowing one run on three hits with two strikes.
In the second game of the day, Brielle Cosentino (Carlstadt, NJ) pitched 4.2
innings, allowing eight hits and three earned runs. Koehler relieved her, allowing
five hits and four earned runs in 0.2 innings. Gillman threw the last 0.2 innings,
giving up no hits, runs or walks in two batters faced.
The only run scored in the first four innings was plated in the first inning
by Jen Jacoby (Agoura Hills, CA), batted in by Vargas. SU had a four–run
fifth inning, including two home runs, to take the lead, 4-1. Syracuse had
a three-run sixth inning to make the final score to 7-1.
The Scarlet Knights will travel to South Bend, IN to play in their last games
of the season on Sunday, May 4 in a doubleheader against Notre Dame at 11 a.m.
