PISCATAWAY, NJ – The Rutgers women’s soccer team (5-3-1) fell to Loyola (2-6) 1-0 on Friday, Sept. 26, at Yurcak Field.
Loyola jumped out to an early lead less than 10 minutes into the match, as Carolyn Kennington broke away behind the defense, sending a shot across the box that ricocheted off the far post and into the goal.
Rutgers came on the attack in the second half, putting Loyola on its heels for the entire final period. RU recorded 11 shots to Loyola’s two in the second period. The Scarlet Knights’ best chance to score came in the 59th minute when sophomore Danae Risoli (Hillsborough, NJ) sent a corner kick into the box which junior Carli Lloyd (Delran, NJ) headed to goal, but Greyhound goalkeeper Kate Gilfillan was there to make the save.
Rutgers tried to capitalize on a yellow card by Loyola late in the match, as Lloyd fired a free kick which bounced off Gilfillan’s hands in front of the goal. Senior Adrrienne Dugandzic (Sicklerville, NJ) collected the rebound, sending a rocket off the keeper’s gloves. Sophomore Kim Brandao (Rahway, NJ) picked up the loose ball in the middle of a crowd, but Gilfillan was finally able to secure the ball.
“We got down early in the match, but we fought hard to come back,” fourth-year head coach Glenn Crooks said. “We have to put this behind us. We start training tomorrow morning and our focus turns to Boston College.”
Rutgers’ aggressive play resulted in a 17-5 shot advantage and a 10-2 edge in corner kicks. RU goalkeeper Robyn Jones (Titusville, NJ) made two saves for the Scarlet Knights (3-3-1), while Gilfillan recorded eight stops for Loyola.
Rutgers was ranked fifth by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and seventh by Soccerbuzz in the Mid-Atlantic Region this week (Sept. 22). RU also received votes in the NSCAA Top 25 Poll.
Rutgers will play its first BIG EAST Conference cross-divisional match of the year Sunday, Sept. 28, when the Scarlet Knights host No. 19 Boston College at 1:00 p.m.
