Lloyd's Late Goal Lifts Rutgers Past Oklahoma 2-1
Sep 05 | Women's Soccer
NOTRE DAME, IN - The Rutgers women's soccer team (3-0) earned its third consecutive victory, defeating Oklahoma (2-1) 2-1 at the Notre Dame Classic Sept. 5.
Freshman Tierney Brady (Brick, NJ) broke the scoreless tie in the 57th minute with her first collegiate goal, lofting a ball over the keeper's head from the right side of the box. Oklahoma rallied to tie the match in the 83rd minute, but the Knights struck back with 2:05 remaining in regulation as junior All-American Carli Lloyd (Delran, NJ) came up the left side, beat the defender and scored from a sharp angle. Freshman Robyn Jones made nine saves in the victory (2-0).
"It's a great win for us against a very strong opponent," fourth-year head coach Glenn Crooks said. "The best part is that we gutted it out in the end. We gave up a late goal, but to have the ability to come back and get the game winner so late in the match is big for us. That's something we struggled with at times last year."
Rutgers, ranked seventh in the Mid-Atlantic Region by both the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and Soccerbuzz, has started the season with three wins for the first time since 1999. The Sooners were ranked tied for ninth by the NSCAA and tied for 10th by Soccerbuzz in the Central Region (Sept. 1).
Rutgers will be back in action on Sunday, Sept. 7, when the Scarlet Knights take on Arizona State at the Notre Dame Classic at 11:00 a.m. CT.
