Rutgers Falls at Miami, 73-63

CORAL GABLES, FL - In a matchup of two BIG EAST teams that have not met in nearly two years, the Miami Hurricanes pulled out a 73-63 victory over the Rutgers Scarlet Knights Wednesday night at the Convocation Center in Coral Gables, FL. With the loss, the Scarlet Knights drop to 9-6 and 1-4 in BIG EAST play, while the Hurricanes improve to 13-5 and 3-1 in league competition.

Junior guard Ricky Shields (Upper Marlboro, MD) collected 19 points with a career-high six three-pointers for RU. He connected on 6-of-10 (.600) shots from three-point range, as the Scarlet Knights shot 11-of-18 (.611) from beyond the arc as a team.

Miami’s Darius Rice overcame a rough first half to score 23 points to lead the Hurricanes.

Against a suffocating Rutgers defense, Rice had just three points on 0-for-5 shooting as Miami entered halftime with a 29-27 lead. Guillermo Diaz and Robert Hite added 14 points apiece for Miami.

Freshman guard Quincy Douby (Brooklyn, NY) chipped in with 11 points for the Scarlet Knights.

Rice scored 12 of Miami's first 17 points after the half as the Hurricanes built a 46-36 lead. Rutgers used superb three-point shooting to close to within 50-47 before Rice scored eight of Miami's next 10 points to give the Hurricanes to a 60-52 lead with 6:54 remaining. The Scarlet Knights never got closer than six points after that.

Despite the loss, Rutgers out-rebounded Miami, 32-31, tonight, marking the 10th time in 15 games the Scarlet Knights have out-rebounded their opponent.

Miami and Rutgers last met two seasons ago with the Scarlet Knights taking a 64-61 victory over the Hurricanes at the Louis Brown Athletic Center on Feb. 17, 2002.

Rutgers returns home to face St. John’s on Saturday at the Louis Brown Athletic Center at 4 p.m.

CLEANING THE GLASS
Rutgers out-rebounded Miami, 32-31, on Wednesday, marking the 10th time in 15 games this season, the Scarlet Knights have out-rebounded their opponent.

SHIELDS SHINES FROM DOWNTOWN
Junior Ricky Shields registered a career-high six three-pointers on Wednesday. He connected on a 6-of-10 (.611) three-point shots and added a free throw for a team-high 19 points.

SCARLET KNIGHTS SIZZLE FROM BEYOND THE ARC
Rutgers shot a season-high 11-for-18 (.611) from three-point range on Wednesday against Miami. It is the second time the Scarlet Knights shot better than 50 percent from three-point range during the 2003-04 campaign, also achieving the feat against Temple with a 12-for-23 (.522) effort on Dec. 3, 2003.
