PISCATAWAY, NJ - Freshman
guard Quincy Douby hit four straight 3-pointers during the game's key run,
leading Rutgers to a 78-70 victory over St. John's Saturday.
In winning for the first time in three games, Rutgers (10-6, 2-4) snapped
an eight-game losing streak to St. John's (4-12, 0-6).
St. John's, which held a 46-42 lead midway through the second half, got as
close as 69-64 with 1:10 remaining but Rutgers freshman guard Marquis Webb
went 8-for-8 from the foul line in the final 51.8 seconds to keep the Red Storm
from drawing any closer. All 10 of Webb’s points came from the free throw
line as he was a perfect 10-for-10 from the charity stripe for the game.
Junior guard Ricky Shields had 19 points and was 4-for-9 from behind the arc.
Senior forward Herve Lamizana added 14 points, five rebounds and four blocked
shots for Rutgers. The Scarlet Knights were red-shot from three-point range,
connecting on 10-of-19 three’s (52.6%). Douby was 5-for-5 from beyond
the arc, to along with Shield’s 4-for-9. Junior guard Juel Wiggan hit
the the only three-point basket that he attempted.
Rutgers, which held a 37-34 advantage in the rebounding department, was led
in that category by senior forward Sean Axani who pulled down nine boards,
while sophomore center Adrian Hill had eight rebounds.
Kyle Cuffe led St. John's with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Daryll Hill had
15 points, while Grady Reynolds added 14 and Elijah Ingram had 10 points.
The Scarlet Knights led 26-24 at halftime but were hurt by committing 12 turnovers
in the opening stanza. In contrast, Rutgers turned the ball over just two times
in the second half.
Rutgers is next in action on Wednesday when the Scarlet Knights travel to
Villanova. Tip-off is 7:30 p.m.
POSTGAME NOTES
SHIELDS MOVES UP THE CHARTS
Junior guard Ricky Shields moved into sole possession of 40th place on RU’s
career scoring list with a three-pointer at the 19:17 mark of the second half,
passing Anthony Duckett (1985-90) with 919 career points. Shields finished the
game with 19 points to give him 925 for his career. He needs three more to tie
Alan Ammerman (1959-62) for 39th place with 928 career points.
SHIELDS, LAMIZANA SPARK OFFENSE
Ricky Shields hit two or more three-pointers
for the 12th time this season, and Rutgers is 9-3 in those games. Additionally,
Herve Lamizana scored in double
figures for the 12th time this season, with the Scarlet Knights posting a
9-3 record in those games.
SECOND SELLOUT OF SEASON
Today’s attendance of 8,097 marks the second sellout of the 2003-04 season
(vs. Connecticut 1/6/04). The 8,097 fans marks the highest attended game of
the season, surpassing the 8,044 vs. Connecticut. It is the 13th sellout in
the three-year tenure of head coach Gary Waters and the 47th in the history
of the RAC. In its last 11 BIG EAST home games, Rutgers has registered nine
sellouts.
RUTGERS FROM DOWNTOWN
The Scarlet Knights have made 10 or more three-pointers five times this season.
Over the past two games, the Scarlet Knights are a combined 21-of-37 (.568)
from three-point territory.
DOUBY SETS CAREER HIGH
Freshman Quincy Douby scored 19 points, two shy of his career high of 21 set
during the Temple game (12/3/03). From 7:31 to 4:45 (a span of 2:46) of the
second half, Douby scored 14 of the Scarlet Knights’ 16 points, including
nine straight.
The five three-pointers made by Quincy Douby is a career-high. He converted
a perfect 5-of-5 three pointers, including three straight for Rutgers in the
second half. His previous career high of four came on two separate occasions
(vs. Temple 12/3 and at Penn State 12/10).
CLEANING THE GLASS
For the 11th time in 16 games, RU out-rebounded its opponent. Against St. John’s,
Rutgers held a 37-34 advantage on the boards.
WEBB REGISTERS 10 FREE THROWS
Freshman Marquis Webb was a perfect 10-for-10
from the free throw line today, marking the first time this season a Scarlet
Knight has converted 10 or more
free throws in a single game. The last Rutgers player to record 10 or more
free throws in a game was Kareem Wright. Wright netted 12-of-13 free throws
against the Orangemen in the 2002-03 season finale on March 9, 2003. The Scarlet
Knight to go a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line was Geoff Billet
against Wichita State on November 29, 1998.
FOUR IN DOUBLE FIGURES FOR FIFTH TIME THIS SEASON
For the fifth time this season
Rutgers’ balanced scoring attack included
at least four players in double figures. Ricky Shields and Quincy Douby led
the Scarlet Knight attack with 19 points apiece. Herve Lamizana poured in 14,
