PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Freshman guard Quincy Douby came off
the bench to score a career-high 24 points and junior forward Herve Lamizana
added
22 points and 12 rebounds as Rutgers defeated Notre Dame 81-70 on Saturday
in front of another roaring, capacity crowd of 8,016 at the RAC.
For Lamizana, it was his fifth career double-double and his third of the season.
The inside-outside combination provided by the 6-10 Lamizana and the 6-3 Douby,
combined for 15-of-26 shooting as Lamizana was 7-for-13 from the field, while
Douby was 8-for-13 and 4-of-6 from three-point range. Douby is now 14-of-18
(.777) from three-point range in his past five games.
Rutgers (12-6, 4-4 Big East) won its third straight game and defeated Notre
Dame (10-7, 4-3) for the third time in four meetings.
Trailing 38-34 at halftime, Rutgers went on a 26-6 run over the first 10:54
of the second half, forcing the Irish into 1-for-12 shooting and five turnovers
during that span.
Lamizana, Douby and Marquis Webb each had seven points in the run as Rutgers
opened a 60-44 advantage.
“In the first half we were not defending the ay we were capable of defending
and I had to get into them pretty hard at halftime,” said Rutgers head
coach Gary Waters. “They made a commitment that they were going to gout
there and defend. Herve only played 29 minutes because of foul trouble but
he really gave us an inside presence. He also rebounded the basketball.
“Quincy, obviously shot the ball well,” Waters added. “I
thought he also worked pretty hard on the defensive end. To score like that
and play good defense is really, really hard and I thought he did a great job
with that.”
Notre Dame pulled to within 65-57 with 5:04 remaining before Ricky Shields'
three-pointer started the Knights on an 11-2 run that gave Rutgers its biggest
lead, 76-59, with 2:58 remaining. Rutgers shot 21-of-25 (.840) as a team from
the free throw line against Notre Dame, marking the seventh time this season
RU has shot 80 percent or better from the free throw line.
Notre Dame center Torin Francis had 23 points, eight rebounds and four blocks
for Notre Dame, while guard Chris Quinn had 19 points.
The Scarlet Knights will be shooting for their first four-game BIG EAST Conference
winning streak since they joined the league in 1995-96 when they host Miami
on Wednesday at the RAC. Tip-off is 7:30 p.m.
