Rutgers Women's Soccer Team Loses to Boston College

PISCATAWAY, NJ – The Rutgers women’s soccer team (6-6, 1-3 BIG EAST) lost 3-0 to visiting Boston College (8-4, 4-2 BIG EAST) Oct. 3 at Yurcak Field.
Boston College scored in the 10th minute when Katie Gallivan’s corner kick bounced out to the top of the box and Tara Luciani was able to knock the ball into the back of the net. Rutgers had an excellent chance to tie the game two minutes later when freshman Amanda Allessio (Langhorne, PA) got loose on a breakaway, but BC keeper Kate Taylor was able to snuff out the first shot, and Allessio’s try on the rebound sailed high.
The Eagles scored on a breakaway in the 59th minute, when Luciani fed a ball through the middle and Laina Ceddia ran on to it and beat the keeper. BC’s final goal came in the 71st minute, as Gallivan launched a corner kick from the left side that bent inside the far post, slipping through the hands of Rutgers keeper Robyn Jones (Titusville, NJ).
“Today was obviously disappointing coming off a big win at (No. 18) Villanova Friday,” said fifth-year head coach Glenn Crooks. “We were a different team today. We didn’t seem to bring the same attitude or energy. The first half was OK, and we had a clear opportunity for the equalizer. The second half was really disappointing. We knew what we had to do and what we had ahead of us, but the team never came together in the second half.”
Sophomore Robyn Jones (Titusville, NJ) did not make a save in goal for the Scarlet Knights (6-6).
Rutgers was ranked ninth by Soccerbuzz in this week’s Mid-Atlantic Region Poll (Sept. 28). Boston College was rated tied for fifth by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and sixth by Soccerbuzz in this week’s Northeast Region Polls.
The Scarlet Knights will travel south down Rt. 1 to face in-state rival and 11th-ranked Princeton Tuesday, Oct. 5, at 7:00 p.m.
