Stringer, U.S. Team Defeat South Korea 80-57

ATHENS, GREECE – Rutgers women’s basketball head coach C. Vivian Stringer and the 2004 U.S. Women’s Basketball Olympic Team outscored South Korea 29-7 in the third quarter on its way to an 80-57 victory Aug. 18. Stringer is serving as an assistant coach for the two-time defending gold medalist U.S. team.
After a poor three-point shooting effort in the first half (1-11), the Americans pounded the ball inside to stretch a seven-point halftime lead (39-32) to a 68-39 advantage at the end of the third period. Lisa Leslie poured in 12 of her game-high 25 points during the third quarter, and Tina Thompson added 18 points in the U.S. win.
The U.S., 3-0 at the Athens Games, will next face Spain Friday, Aug. 20. That game will be shown on the USA Network at 7:30 a.m., and will mark the fourth of five pool-play games for the Americans.
Stringer, who will begin her 33rd season on the college sidelines this fall, owns the fourth-highest victory total in women’s college basketball history (695-239), including a 175-104 mark in her nine seasons at Rutgers. A member of the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame, the three-time national coach of the year remains the only coach, men’s or women’s, to lead three different schools to the NCAA Tournament Final Four (Cheyney in 1982, Iowa in 1993 and Rutgers in 2000).
