Stringer Begins Olympic Prep

PISCATAWAY, NJ – Rutgers women’s basketball head coach C. Vivian Stringer, who will serve as an assistant coach for the 2004 U.S. Women’s Basketball Olympic Team, will join the team Aug. 3 as the Americans conduct their final practices prior to the Games.
The Olympic Team will gather in New York City Aug. 3 for two days of practice, followed by a game against a team of WNBA All-Stars Aug. 5 at Radio City Music Hall (7:00 p.m., ESPN).
The team will then travel Aug. 6 to Salamanca, Spain, for additional practices, followed by a tournament Aug. 8-9 that will include the national teams from Spain, Poland and France.
Following a final practice in Spain Aug. 10, the team will depart for Athens, where it will conduct practices
Aug. 12-13. The Games’ Opening Ceremonies will be held Aug. 13, and the U.S. will tip off its Olympic schedule Aug. 14 against New Zealand.
Stringer, who will begin her 33rd season on the college sidelines this fall, owns the fourth-highest victory total in women’s college basketball history (695-239), including a 175-104 mark in her nine seasons at Rutgers. A member of the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame, the three-time national coach of the year remains the only coach, men’s or women’s, to lead three different schools to the NCAA Tournament Final Four (Cheyney in 1982, Iowa in 1993 and Rutgers in 2000).
