NORFOLK, VA - The previously unbeaten Rutgers men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to 11th-ranked Old Dominion in the final game of the Stihl Soccer Classic on Sunday afternoon at ODU Soccer Stadium. With the loss, Rutgers falls to 1-1-2 on the season, while ODU improves its mark to 4-0.
ODU staked a 1-0 lead in the 29th after Brian Cvilikas received a ball from Edson Elcock, sending a shot that barely crept over the goal line. The score would hold up as ODU took top honors in the weekend tournament that also included William & Mary and Navy.
The Monarchs outshot Rutgers, 10-7. The Scarlet Knights held a 6-3 edge in corner kicks. Sophomore Lubos Ancin (Burlington, NJ) made two saves for Rutgers, while ODU's John Connelly made three stops in preserving his third shutout of the season.
'We played well,' said Rutgers head coach Bob Reasso. 'This is our third game in five days and we may have been a little tired. I thought we controlled the possession for most of the match, but couldn't capitalize on our opportunities.'
Senior co-captain Wes Kirk (Bloomfield, NJ) and junior Abdul Kargbo (Alexandria, VA) represented Rutgers on the All-Tournament team.
Rutgers returns home to face Temple on Wednesday, Sept. 15, at Yurcak Field at 7 p.m.
