PISCATAWAY, NJ – Rutgers junior back Kim Brandao (Rahway, NJ) has been named to the Soccerbuzz National Elite Team of the Week for Division I women’s soccer, the group has announced.
Brandao, also named the BIG EAST Conference Co-Defensive of the Week and a member of the Soccer America National Team of the Week, helped organize a Rutgers defense that allowed just one goal in two victories last weekend at the Rutgers Classic. In the 1-0 upset of No. 12 Santa Clara Sept. 10, Brandao and the RU defense allowed just three shots, two of which were on goal. In Rutgers’ 2-1 double-overtime victory against Michigan State Sept. 12, Brandao helped organize a RU defense that allowed five shots in 105:50 of play, earning herself all-tournament team honors.
This marks the second time during Brandao’s career that the back has been honored with a selection to the Soccerbuzz Elite Team of the Week (Oct. 22, 2003).
Brandao’s Soccerbuzz honor is the latest in a string of awards this week for the Scarlet Knights. Sophomore Robyn Jones (Titusville, NJ) was named the BIG EAST and Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Goalkeeper of the Week, back Ashley Lunemann (Hillsborough, NJ) was named the BIG EAST Rookie of the Week, and the Scarlet Knights returned to the national polls for the first time in two years, placing 24th in this week’s National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Poll and 21st in the Soccer America top 25.
No. 24 Rutgers (4-2) will play its second ranked opponent in a three-match span, traveling to Gainesville, FL, to face the No. 9 Florida Gators (4-1-1) Friday, Sept. 17. Kickoff at Percy Beard Stadium (4,500) is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
