NEW YORK, NY – Former Rutgers women’s basketball standout and current New York Liberty head coach Pat Coyle (’82) helped lead the Liberty to a 2-1 series victory against the defending WNBA champion Detroit Shock, advancing New York to the Eastern Conference Finals.
Coyle, who was named the Liberty’s interim head coach July 3 after the team relieved Richie Adubato of his head coaching duties, helped lead the Liberty to a 66-64 victory against the Shock in the series’ deciding game Sept. 28 at Madison Square Garden. New York will next play the winner of the Washington-Connecticut series in the Eastern Conference Finals.
Coyle was a catalyst for the 1981-82 Rutgers team, which won the AIAW national championship. She scored 30 points in the 83-77 title victory over Texas, and finished her career at Rutgers with 1,209 points, currently No. 17 on the Scarlet Knights’ all-time scoring list.
Prior to joining the Liberty as an assistant coach in 1998, Coyle served as
head coach at Loyola (MD) from 1992-98, where she recorded a mark of 100-77.
She also served as an assistant coach at Miami (1983-85), Rutgers (1988-89)
and Saint Joseph’s (1989-92).
