UNIVERSITY PARK, PA – The Rutgers volleyball team
(1-2) picked up its first win of the season, defeating Quinnipiac 30-17, 30-19
and 30-16 at the Penn State Invitational on Sept. 4. RU dropped the first match
of the day against BYU 30-27, 30-18, 22-30, 29-31 and 15-10.
In the evening match against Quinnipiac, senior Casey Castillo (Honolulu,
HI) and sophomore Lora Yankauskus (Paramus, NJ) led the Scarlet Knights with
12 kills apiece, while junior Abbey Martin (Topeka, KS) added a match-high
32 assists. Senior Dawn Christjaener (Huntington Beach, CA) led the team with
a match-high 20 digs.
In RU’s first match of the day against BYU, junior Courtney Stout (San
Marcos, CA) recorded a double-double with 11 kills and 15 digs. Senior Stephanie
Travioli (Arlington, TX) led the Scarlet Knights with 18 kills, while Yankauskus
tallied 14 kills of her own. Martin added a team-high 47 assists and Christjaener
once again led the Scarlet Knights in digs with 18.
Rutgers volleyball will return to action on Sept. 10-11 at the Radisson Invitational.
RU will face tournament host, Western Michigan on Sept. 10 at 7:00 p.m. The
Scarlet Knights will play two matches on the final day of competition against
Marquette at 12:00 p.m. and Maine at 4:30 p.m.
