Rutgers Men's Soccer Blanks Monmouth, 2-0
Sep 08 | Men's Soccer
PISCATAWAY, NJ — Freshman Tommy Gray (Middletown, NJ) continued to impress Scarlet Knight soccer fans Wednesday night, scoring his first collegiate goal in a 2-0 shutout of Monmouth. With the victory, Rutgers improves to 1-0-1 heading into a crucial early-season test this weekend. The victory improves RU’s record to 11-0 all-time against Monmouth. The Hawks fall to 1-2-0 with the loss.
Gray handled a pass from sophomore Nick LaBrocca (Howell, NJ) near the top left corner of the box and fired a hard, low shot past Monmouth goalkeeper Frank Gullace for his first career goal 35 minutes into the match.
Junior Scott Gahagan (Old Bridge, NJ) added an insurance goal in the 83rd minute to give Rutgers the 2-0 victory. Senior Gustavo Mora (Asuncion, Paraguay) brought the ball just inside the box and pulled his defender to the left, then sent a perfect cross to Gahagan, who punched in the score from 10 yards out.
Rutgers was dominant on the offensive end, outshooting Monmouth, 18-5. Senior Andrew Herman (Oceanside, NY) led the way for RU with eight shots, including four on goal.
RU had several opportunities to add to its lead, highlighted by an exciting exchange in the second half when Gray served a perfectly-placed ball for Herman, whose shot ricocheted off the goalie. Senior Brian Johnson (Marshfield, MA) collected the rebound and headed in a ball that bounced off the right post.
Sophomore Lubos Ancin (Burlington, NJ) got the start in goal for the Scarlet Knights, making two saves. Gullace was active between the posts for the Hawks, recording six saves, surrendering both RU goals.
“We came out a little tight but calmed down and were the more superior team as the match progressed,” said Rutgers head coach Bob Reasso. “Tommy Gray scored a fabulous goal to get us going. Monmouth played extremely hard in an effort to fight back into it, but we did a good job defending tonight.”
Rutgers will travel to Norfolk, VA, this weekend to participate in the Old Dominion Tournament. The Scarlet Knights will play William & Mary on Friday at 4:30 p.m. before facing host ODU, ranked 11th nationally, on Sunday at 2 p.m.
