EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J - Despite a combined 33 points from guards Ricky Shields and Quincy Douby, Rutgers (7-8, 1-4 BIG EAST) fell to intrastate rival Seton Hall 74-58 on Saturday afternoon at the Continental Airlines Arena.
Kelly Whitney scored 19 points and Seton Hall (9-7, 1-4 BIG EAST) snapped a four-game losing streak by shooting .455 percent from the floor (25-of-55) and .800 percent from the free throw line (16-of-20).
Midway through the second half, the Scarlet Knights were forced to play the remainder of the game without forward Marquis Webb who was ejected from the game with 11:34 left due to a flagrant foul. Rutgers was never able to get closer than eight points the rest of the way.
J.R. Morris had 12 of his 15 points in the second half in leaving Providence (9-8, 0-4) as the only Big East team without a win in the conference this year. The Friars were idle Saturday.
Jamar Nutter scored all 11 of his career high points for Seton Hall in the first half. Shields had 17 points and Douby 16 for Rutgers, which will look to get even with the Pirates when Seton Hall comes to the Rutgers Athletic Center on Feb. 8. Juel Wiggan added 10 points and four rebounds off the bench for RU. Byron Joynes also enjoyed a productive contest, scoring six points and grabbing seven rebounds in 32 minutes of action.
Nutter, who had never scored more than seven points in 13 collegiate games, hit 4-of-5 shots in the half, including his first three from 3-point range, in helping Seton Hall take a 34-30 halftime lead.
The Pirates opened the second half with a 12-4 run to take a 46-34 lead. Whitney had six points, freshman Justin Cerasoli ignited the spurt with a three-point play and Morris closed it with a 3-point basket.
The Scarlet Knights are back in action on Monday, Jan. 24, when seventh-ranked Syracuse comes to the RAC for a Big Monday showdown at 7:00 p.m. The game is sold out and can be seen live on ESPN.
