PISCATAWAY, NJ - Junior Nick LaBrocca (Howell, NJ) scored his third goal of the season, as the Rutgers men's soccer team (2-6-2, 1-3-1 BIG EAST) and Cincinnati (6-2-2, 4-0-2 BIG EAST) played to a 1-1 tie on Saturday, Oct. 1, at Yurcak Field.
Both teams played a tight first half, as they combined for just 11 shots in the opening period. The Scarlet Knights got on the board when junior Bart Koffeman (The Hague, Holland) found LaBrocca cutting to the left of the box. LaBrocca controlled the pass and fired a shot into the upper right-hand corner of the goal to give RU an early 1-0 lead at the 51:03 mark.
The Scarlet Knights' lead was short lived, as Cincinnati responded in the 53rd minute with a goal of its own. With a pair of Rutgers defenders bearing down on him, the Bearcats' Kenny Anaba gained control of the ball just in front of the net and took a shot that found the upper right of the goal, tying the game at 1-1.
'We tried to get [Cincinnati] to play our style of game but we didn't,' said head coach Bob Reasso. 'They tend to want to play big ball, where as we like to put the ball on the ground and pass more. They played to their strengths and unfortunately we let them beat us. We should have won this game.'
Rutgers out shot Cincinnati 13-10, holding the Bearcats to six shots under their season average, as junior Lubos Ancin (Burlington, NJ) made four saves in 110 minutes of action in goal.
RU returns to play on Wednesday, Oct. 5, when it hosts the Villanova Wildcats at 7:00 p.m. at Yurcak Field.
