Rutgers Volleyball Falls to Cincinnati 3-1

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ – The Rutgers University volleyball team (6-10, 1-2 BIG EAST) dropped a hard-fought 3-1 (20-30, 30-23, 26-30, 32-34) decision to BIG EAST opponent Cincinnati (9-5, 3-0 BIG EAST) on Saturday afternoon at the College Avenue Gymnasium.

The Scarlet Knights battled back from an early one game deficit, as they forced 11 Bearcat attack errors and a .027 hitting percentage in the second set. In the fourth game, RU showed tremendous effort to send the game into extra points, before eventually being outscored 34-32.

Junior Lora Yankauskas (Paramus, NJ) led Rutgers with a match-high 26 kills and added eight digs, while freshman Kyra Thompson (Tucson, AZ) followed with 12 kills and 10 digs. Freshman Roxy Calder (Oceanside, CA) and junior Tamarie Macon (Fayetteville, NC) split time at the setter position with Calder registering 26 assists, while Macon added a career-high 24 assists. Macon also topped her career numbers in block assists with five.

On defense, the Scarlet Knights out-blocked the Bearcats 16-11, as senior Ashleigh Young (Albany, OR) posted a match-high 12 total blocks (two solo, 10 assists). Yankauskas, Thompson and senior Courtney Stout (San Marcos, CA) added three block assists apiece, while junior Jocelyn Greenwald (Old Tappan, CA) led RU with 13 defensive digs and Stout chipped in 12.

The Scarlet Knights will face No. 6 Louisville on Sunday, Oct. 2, at 2:00 p.m. at the College Avenue Gymnasium.
