Rutgers Gains 3-1 BIG EAST Win Over DePaul
Oct 15 | Men's Soccer
CHICAGO, IL - The Rutgers men's soccer team (5-7-2, 3-4-1 BIG EAST) scored two second-half goals and gained three valuable points with a 3-1 BIG EAST Conference victory over DePaul on Saturday afternoon in Chicago, IL.
With the win, Rutgers is 3-1-2 in its last six games and has 10 points in the BIG EAST Red Division with three divisional games left to play. DePaul (3-7-2, 1-5-1 BIG EAST) entered the game with seven points and was tired with Syracuse for the sixth and final playoff spot. A Louisville win over Villanova on Saturday would put the Scarlet Knights and Cardinals in a tie for the fourth playoff position in the division. With a Villanova win, RU would be in sole possession of fifth place.
DePaul struck first off a free kick opportunity. Following a foul on the Scarlet Knights, Luke Rojo lined up the free kick from 40 yards out. His serve into the box found a streaking Minniti who headed it past Rutgers' Matt VanOekel (Chesapeake, VA) at 16:31.
Rutgers knotted the match at 1-1 when the DePaul defense attempted to clear the ball from the corner. The ball ended up at the top of the penalty box where Jake Martenson (Winchester, VA) gathered it and sent shot to the upper left corner past a diving Brian Visser at 37:42.
The scored remained at 1-1 into halftime as Rutgers outshot DePaul, 6-2, in the first half. Overall, RU tallied 12 shots in the match compared to nine for the Blue Demons. The Scarlet Knights also registered six corner kicks to three for DePaul.
The eventual game-winner came early in the second half off a pair of nice passes by Kevin O'Connor (Freehold, NJ) and Chris Moore (New Castle, England). Moore took O'Connor's feed in the left corner and sent a cross into the box that Adam Sternberger fired past Visser at 49:37.
Adam Lloyd (Warwick, NY) added the insurance goal in the 78th minute when he found himself all alone outside the penalty box. Lloyd's shot from 25 yards beat Visser into the upper left corner at 77:01.
"This was a good win for us today espically because of what it means in the BIG EAST race," said head coach Bob Reasso. "We've been making progress as a young team over the last couple of weeks, particularly on offense. This win puts us in position to play some very meaningful matches over the last two weeks of the regular season."
The Rutgers offense has awoken in the past two games, registering six goals, 28 shots and 10 corner kicks against Bucknell and DePaul. Sternberger has two goals in the past two games, and VanOekel has been the winning goalkeeper in each contest. Today's match was the ninth time in 14 games that the Scarlet Knights have outshot their opponent.
Rutgers returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 19, when it begins a three-match homestand against non-confence foe Saint Peter's at 7:00 p.m.
