Montero Lifts Rutgers Past Cincinnati, 1-0
Oct 21 | Women's Soccer
CINCINNATI, OH – The Rutgers women’s soccer team (8-9-1, 4-6 BIG EAST) earned a 1-0 victory at Cincinnati (3-11-3, 1-8-1 BIG EAST) Oct. 21, and with the win, moved one step closer to qualifying for the BIG EAST Tournament.
RU (4-6 BIG EAST, 12 points) is tied with DePaul (3-4-3, 12 points) for the fifth and final tourney berth in Division B. Seton Hall, which has 10 points with a 3-6-1 mark, trails the Scarlet Knights and Blue Demons. Georgetown (4-5-1) is in fourth place with 13 points. Each team has one regular-season match remaining.
Freshman Nina Montero (Vineland, NJ) scored RU’s lone goal in the eighth minute, when the Bearcat keeper came out her goal to try to make a play on a ball crossing the box, but Montero chipped it over her head for the game-winning score.
Redshirt junior Nora Crawford (McLean, VA) made three saves for the shutout victory.
“We had some tough conditions with a driving rain at the start of the match,” said sixth-year Rutgers head coach Glenn Crooks. “It slowed down, and the FieldTurf drained pretty well, but it made for a tough match. It was great for the team to win a game like that. You have to be physically involved the whole time and you have to battle in those conditions. We like to get in a rhythm and have possession, but the conditions wouldn’t allow that. Obviously, this is a big win for us, and gets us closer to a tournament berth. Now we just have to go out Sunday, get a win at Louisville and see what happens.”
RU will finish the regular season Sunday, Oct. 23, at Louisville at 1:00 p.m.
