Field Hockey Knocks Off Radford With Last Second Goal
Oct 22 | Field Hockey
Both the Scarlet Knights and the Highlanders were unable to find their respective grooves in the first half, until Spector connected on her team-leading seventh goal in the 35th minute of the game.
After being awarded a penalty corner, Rutgers sophomore midfielder Jocelyn Mattina (Bethlehem, PA) pushed out to fellow sophomore midfielder Corrine Bach (Moorestown, NJ). After stopping the pass from Mattina, Bach directed a ball beautifully to Spector, who was able to rifle a shot past Radford goalie Amy Dietz to give the Scarlet Knights a one-goal advantage heading into the break.
In the 57th minute, Radford received the equalizing goal from Emily Jones, off of passes from Tiffany Church and Kiera Gambeski. With the score knotted at 1-1, the teams would go to the final minute, when the Scarlet Knights were awarded a penalty corner.
With just a few second left on the clock, just enough time to get a corner and a shot off, Mattina pushed to Bach, who stopped a shuffled the Lewis. Lewis quickly turned and fired a shot that beat Dietz for the game-winning goal with no time left on the clock.
Mattina and Bach each have 11 assists on the season, while Mattina's assists, plus her three goals, give her a team-leading 17 points on the season. Lewis' goal gives her six for the season, to go along with four assists for 16 points.
Sophomore goalie Rosalyn Wentko (Dallas, PA) earned her fifth win of the season and has 89 saves in 16 games played.
The win improved the Scarlet Knights to 7-10 on the season and snapped the team's five game losing streak. The loss dropped Radford to 6-8 on the season
The Scarlet Knights will return to action on Friday, Oct. 28 when they travel the Princeton, NJ, to take on the Tigers.
