PISCATAWAY, NJ – Two first-half goals were enough for the Scarlet Knights as the Rutgers women’s soccer team (10-9-1, 5-6 BIG EAST) defeated Pittsburgh (4-11-3, 3-6-2 BIG EAST) 3-0 in the BIG EAST Tournament’s first round Oct. 27 at Yurcak Field.
With the victory, the Scarlet Knights (fourth seed, Division B) advance to the quarterfinal round and will meet Division A top seed and No. 14 Connecticut Sunday, Oct. 30, at 1:00 p.m. in Storrs, CT.
Sophomore Amanda Allessio (Langhorne, PA) turned a struck a shot at the 21:00 mark to give Rutgers the 1-0 lead midway through the first half. Less than 15 minutes later, Nina Montero (Vineland, NJ) found sophomore Leia Rispoli (Kendall Park, NJ) in the middle of the box, and Rispoli looped a shot inside the right post, scoring her first career goal for a 2-0 Rutgers advantage.
Freshman Kristen Edmonds (Metuchen, NJ) notched the final goal in the 74th minute, weaving around several Pitt defenders in the box, pulling the keeper out of the goal and scoring on the unattended net.
Nora Crawford (McLean, VA) made three saves for her seventh shutout of the season. Rutgers earned its sixth straight win, and fifth consecutive shutout victory.
“To see Amanda score a goal like that was fantastic,” said sixth-year Rutgers head coach Glenn Crooks. “We have demanded more opportunities out of our midfielders, and the first two goals both came from our attacking midfielders. And Edmonds did her thing on the third goal.”
